Fabric vs Leather Upholstery: What are the Benefits?
Comfort: Fabric upholstery is typically thought of as more comfortable due to the softness and warmth of its material. Leather can be extremely hot or cold to the skin, depending on the temperature, and at times can feel sticky. However, upholstery is secondary when measuring the comfort of a sofa, and details such as base support, cushion foam density, seat depth, and fight back or pillow back design should be considered first when determining what sofa might be ideal for you and your personal comfort preferences.
Care: Leather upholstery does not absorb spills or stains as quickly and is fairly easy to just wipe clean with a warm cloth. However, most synthetic fabrics are colourfast and treated with a stain-resistant finish to make them more durable and easier to clean, and they do not scratch and show wear as easily as leather. Kids, pets and general frequency of use are important things to consider when assessing the care and maintenance of your sofa and whether or not leather or fabric will be better suited to your needs.
Colour/ Pattern Choices: One of the biggest benefits of choosing fabric is the unlimited colour and pattern options. Although it is possible to find leather upholstery in bright colours, it is more commonly found in neutral shades of brown, black and white. However, if you want to ensure your sofa investment stays in fashion longer, neutral colours are a great choice as they adapt easily to room redecorating and can be inexpensively accessorized with colourful throw cushions.
Budget: Fabric is generally a more affordable and better value option when shopping for a new sectional sofa. Although there is a broad price range for both fabric and leather sofas, an identical sofa in leather upholstery will always cost more.
